Summer is right around the corner in the US and while boys get ready to display abs and girls try on their best bikinis i like to take this entry to refer to one of the most disturbing phenom in the -all about look- society we seem to be living in: The Thigh Gap.
Thigh Gap refers to the space between someones thighs, leaving the legs looking long and skinny.
Despite refering to the US, the whole body conscious situation we are living, goes way far than the americans limits and its seems to be taking social media by storm. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, Snapchat, you name it, in each and every single one of these platforms you seem to find a hole alley dedicated to promote skinny bikini girl, a flat tummy, ripped abs, amazing cheekbones, a perfect round ass -and boobs, between others.
At first, theres nothing wrong about it.. right? I mean, anyone can upload and post photos, texts and videos about whatever they want, so .. whats the problem with some inspiration photos for those who are down in a struggle to lose weight or are just looking for inspiration for when they are in the gym pushing themselves to be the best they can be.
The problem is and will always be - refering to the thigh gap situation- when things go from inspirations to OBSESSIONS. There is SUCH a thin line between these two concepts that all of these media attraction is just making it worse.
Here is an example:
I took this photo straigth from Tumblr, the -by far- platform known for raw and cruel comments and posts about eating disorders, binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. Tumblr, which was created with the purporse of sharing high quality pictures, has became the home and safe place for millions of male and female teenagers for sharing their tragic and difficult times with losing weight, cutting themselves, the struggle of the social pressure and even suicide attempts.
Its SCARY when going on tumblr and simply typing in the search bar #eatingdisorder and see what comes up. Thousands of images will start loading and hundreds of texts will leave you feeling depressed and -in my case- sad for what thousands of people seems to be going throw and how it seems to take over their lifes.
This picture shows EXACTLY whats is going throw thousands of women minds, at least from now and then, and in the teenage years, more frecuently that it definetely should.
Should i ask the question: What is the perfect body? Does it even exist?
It seems to be such a thing, an obsession, a freacking trending topic the whole perfect body situation that it leads us to believe this is all we care about!!! Why the hell are we turning on the TV and watching non other things than Americas Next Top Model - where girls are 5'11 (1.80 mts) and up and cant be over 126 lbs (57 kg), Skins (UK) - where the main role model is a dark suicide girl that only smokes, drinks, and have sex - and The Kardashians where its all about looks, butts and who looks better in skinny jeans.
The real question is What are the teens taking in? What goes throw their mind? What is the main thing they are thinking before going to sleep, before deciding with whom their sitting in school, what are they picking in the lunch service, what are they allowed to eat past 7 pm.. etc.
THATS the thing. All of these social media and all of this way to say You are what you eat and No pain no gain - among others- is not having the effect that looks for. People are OBSESSING about their looks, the calories, the body fat, not eating meat, carbs, fruits, dairy, or whatever that isnt green or that isnt in the -now so popular-Paleo Diet.
Every diet that comes out seems to be the ultimate saviour for those who doesnt love their body. Every single one of the books about dieting gets best seller position in no time. Celebrities who are a size zero love revealing the amazing secret to weight loss and everybody feels like their problems are finally solved. They are NOT. Its not about the diet, the programm, the calorie counting or the starving, is about what is going throw your mind when you think about food and how are you positioning food in your pyramid of priorities.
ALL of us are what we call society. We must take in consideration all of this. Our goals should be base on life time achievements, professional dreams, romantic aspirations, fitness goals, health steps, whatever that is done in the not harmful way. Its amazing and makes me happy the fact that we are taking more and more in consideration what we eat and how we eat it, but that shouldn need to mean i cant eat what ever i feel like it from now and then and in the right measure and as long i have my health as a #1.
This topic is a huge one, so these are some short ideas. Having small sisters worries me to death by the fact we are leading up to a society where you cannot move without noticing someones height, weight, jeans size, neck size, cheekbones, skinny fingers and the so infamous thigh gap that even took on one of the most Love your body ambassador, world known singer Beyonce, to photoshop her own image so she can deliver to her fans the so called amazing legs and gap. Thats the message we want to hear? Judge yourself.
Seems to be a connection between this two ...right?
